A Place to Pause, Remember, and Reflect

James Johnson lived with quiet strength and a deep appreciation for the natural world. Born in the small town of Dragerton, Utah, with the Book Cliffs Mountains stretching beyond his backyard, James spent a lifetime close to the land — hunting, fishing, camping, and finding peace and renewal beneath open skies. For nearly 50 years he made his home in Northern California, where he raised five children, built and repaired structures throughout his community, and worked as a stationary engineer at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for 27 years.

A lifelong student of philosophy, James moved through the world with curiosity, warmth, and a generous spirit. Whether gathered around a campfire or seated at the kitchen table, he welcomed the deeper questions of life — faith, purpose, and our connection to one another — and shared his wisdom with grace and openness. Those who knew him will remember not just what he believed, but the way he invited others into meaningful conversation.

James passed away peacefully on June 3, 2026, just two days before his 83rd birthday, surrounded by the mountains he loved and his beloved wife of 54 years, Susan, by his side.

In his memory, the James Johnson Family Memorial Fund will support the placement of a memorial bench at Chester Cemetery — a quiet place where family, friends, and future visitors may pause, reflect, and take in the landscape that meant so much to him.

Family and friends are invited to contribute in James’s honor — creating a lasting place of remembrance that honors the life he lived so fully.
