Milestone for Local News: The Plumas Sun Achieves 501(c)(3) Status

Plumas Sun Team celebrate one-year anniversary August 2024

When Plumas News announced it would cease operations in 2023, our region faced a staggering local information gap. To ensure the community remained connected and informed, volunteers immediately launched a new vision for independent media. The Almanor Foundation (TAF) is proud to announce a major milestone in this journey: The Plumas Sun has officially achieved its independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit status. Having served as the project’s fiscal sponsor by hosting an Incubator Fund for the Sun, TAF is thrilled to see this essential source of Plumas County news reach this level of sustainability and growth.

How an Incubator Fund Supports Local Nonprofits

Many people ask how TAF helps new ideas get off the ground. Through fiscal sponsorship, we act as a nonprofit incubator. This means TAF provides the legal and tax-exempt status, back-office administration, and financial oversight necessary for a fledgling project to start raising money immediately—before they receive their own IRS approval of charitable status.

By housing The Plumas Sun as an incubator fund, TAF handled the vital administrative heavy lifting:

  • Tax-Deductible Donations: Issuing receipts to generous community donors.
  • Expenses & Payments: Processing stipends for local reporters and writers.
  • Compliance: Managing the financial oversight required of a 501(c)(3).

This allowed the editorial team at the Sun to focus entirely on their mission: delivering reliable Plumas County news.

Impact Report: 600+ Articles for the Community

Since August 2023, this partnership has yielded incredible results:

  • Nearly 600 original articles produced by local reporters.
  • Approximately 2,700 community press releases shared.
  • Consistent, daily coverage of local government and events.

The Success of The Plumas Sun Independent Launch

We are incredibly proud to see The Plumas Sun reach this definitive goal. This transition is exactly why TAF’s Incubator Fund exists: to empower vital community projects until they can stand as self-sustaining, independent pillars of the region.

While TAF will continue to assist with the gradual transition of business functions over the coming months, the Sun is now officially steering its own ship. We look forward to watching them continue to shine as a primary source of news for our region for years to come.

Support Local Journalism: As they move into this next phase, the Sun has launched its own direct donation platform. We encourage our supporters to continue investing in the future of independent local media by contributing to them directly.
