Giving Through Your IRA: A Smart Way to Support Your Community

Seniors financial giving

If you’re age 70½ or older and have a traditional IRA, there’s a powerful way to support the causes you care about—while also reducing your tax burden. It’s called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), and it allows you to donate directly from your IRA to a nonprofit like The Almanor Foundation.

What Is a QCD?

A QCD lets you transfer up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity. This gift counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and is excluded from your taxable income.

Why Consider a QCD?

  • Lower Your Taxes
QCDs aren’t counted as income, which can reduce your overall tax liability—especially helpful if you don’t itemize deductions.
  • Meet Your RMD Without the Tax Hit
You can satisfy your RMD and support a cause you love, all without increasing your taxable income.
  • Support What Matters Most
Your gift helps fund programs that strengthen our community—from disaster relief to education and housing.
  • Potential State Tax Benefits
Depending on your state, you may also enjoy additional tax savings.

How to Make a QCD

  1. Confirm Eligibility
You must be 70½ or older and have a traditional IRA. (Roth IRAs don’t qualify.)
  2. Choose a Qualified Charity
Most 501(c)(3) nonprofits are eligible. The Almanor Foundation qualifies.
  3. Contact Your IRA Custodian
Request the distribution and ensure the check is made payable to the charity—not to you.
  4. Keep Documentation
Save the receipt from the charity and report the QCD correctly on your taxes.
