The Maidu Summit Consortium will be hosting the Big Time Logging Jamboree sponsored by Collins Pines on June 3 at Chester Park. “We had a great crowd last year from participants and fans who came out to cheer the competitors,” says Trina Cunningham, executive director. “This year we added more of the Maidu tradition to the event with the opening welcome and traditional songs presented in the Maidu language. This is an opportunity for people to enjoy the fun of a jamboree and learn more of the Maidu culture, which is steeped in the area’s history and remains an integral part of what happens today and in the future of Plumas County as stewards of the land.” The welcome will be presented by Allen Lowry and traditional songs will be sung by Vance Hedrick.
The jamboree, in partnership with The Almanor Foundation (TAF) and Feather River Tourism Association (FRTA), will feature 10 competitions from the popular long-handle axe-throwing to one of the most vigorous, the hand saw. Each category has a prize of $325 and the overall winner will receive $1,000, courtesy of Collins Pines.
The free event will offer food and craft vendors, music from local singing dentist, Dr. Jeffery Benedictson and beverages poured by TAF. For those interested in supporting the replanting of the forests, tree seedlings can be purchased in their name or in memorandum of a loved one. Event is from 12:00 to 4:00pm with entrance registration beginning at 11:00am. For more information, call 530.258.2299, email misty@maidusummit.org or visit www.maidusummit.org
